Love a Snack? Not Sure What to Eat?

Our schedules are packed, and our to-do lists never seem to end, which often leaves us reaching for quick snacks. But instead of opting for the bag of chips, there are plenty of nutrition-packed alternatives that are just as convenient. With a little planning, you can prioritize snacks that are both delicious and good for you, even on your busiest days.

When done right, snacks can help you can avoid those dreaded energy crashes, sugar cravings (this may happen if you haven't eaten enough protein/calories), and feel more balanced throughout your day.

In this post, I’ll share some easy high protein snack ideas that will keep you energized!

Nutritious healthy muffins

Yogurt Bowl (can be prepped ahead of time)

  • Greek yogurt is high in protein—about 20 grams per cup—and makes for a great post-workout snack, or anytime snack. Yogurt is a perfect vehicle to add in some additional goodies, such as chia seeds, fruit, or a small handful of cereal for crunch.

Cottage Cheese

  • Add cottage cheese on top of 1 slice of whole grain toast. For a little sweet touch, add some low sugar jam, or chop up a few slices of fresh or dried fruit such as figs.

Roasted Chickpeas, Green Peas, or Edamame

  • If you're craving something crunchy, roasted chickpeas, green peas, or edamame are a fantastic options. They’re easy to make at home: just toss them in olive oil, season with your favourite spices, and roast them until crispy. For convenience, you can find this pre-packaged at the grocery store in both salted an unsalted versions.

Lupini Beans

  • Jarred lupini beans are an excellent snack choice. They're naturally salty and packed with protein. Just remember to give them a rinse before eating. A bonus: they’re a slow snack! The thin skin around each bean requires you to remove it with your teeth, making it a more mindful eating experience.

Smoothie

  • You might opt for a quick protein shake if you are in a rush, but if you have a little bit more time—go for a smoothie! Similar to the yogurt, it is a great vehicle to add in many different combinations of ingredients. Choose yogurt, cottage cheese, hemp seeds, or protein powder as your main protein source.

Homemade Baked Goods

  • If you have some time, try prepping high-fiber, high-protein nutrition-packed muffins, bars, loaves, or even bean brownies. The options are endless, and the recipes you can find online are too! Pro tip* this can double up as part of your breakfast, especially when you are in a rush. For example, grab a high protein muffin, pair it with some fruit, and add a handful of nuts for a balanced on-the-go meal.

Veggie Sticks with Hummus (or) Nut Butter

  • For a quick and easy savoury snack, try pairing fresh veggie sticks (like carrots and celery) with hummus or nut butter (savoury nut butters such as sunflower seed butter or peanut butter work well with vegetables). Hummus, made with chickpeas and tahini, and nut/seed butters both provide a great dose of healthy fats, fiber, and protein!

Nut Butter & Fruit (fresh or dried)

  • One simple swap is trading in sugary granola bars for a spoonful of nut butter paired with apple or banana slices. You may also love pairing some dried figs or dates with nut butter for a quick and convenient pick me up.

Snacks on the Go

  • When you’re on the move, you need snacks that are portable! Here's a tip—stock your car, work drawer, purse, or work bag with non-perishable goodies. Think protein bars, nuts, homemade trail mix, single-serve peanut butter pouches, dried fruit (look for no added sugar, and no sulfites).
